New multi-use social services hub for Christchurch.

The Christchurch City Mission redevelopment is three new buildings, including a three-storey, 15-bed transitional housing facility, single storey café, and two-storey food bank, warehouse and offices. They all sit on concrete waffle pod raft slabs, with the housing building and café featuring CLT walls, floors and beams. We used more traditional precast concrete panels and steel framing in the food bank building to accommodate the expansive, open-plan layout.

We built the project in two stages to allow the City Mission to keep operating their op shop on one side of the site while we built the housing and café. With their existing operations in full swing both next door and across the road from our site and the build commencing amid the Covid-19 pandemic, we implemented stringent procedures to keep everybody safe.

We enjoyed building a close relationship with the Christchurch City Mission, taking part in fundraising and volunteering events and contributing building materials for their community and maintenance projects. Our team also enthusiastically support the excellent community café, which is just around the corner from our Christchurch office!

The City Mission is enjoying their new facilities, which have enabled them to increase the services they offer to the city’s most vulnerable population, including wraparound housing and social support, training opportunities in the café, and the South Island’s first supermarket-style self-service food bank.
